Dendrobates leucomelas
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 30mm Description Dorsal surface and flanks have a general pattern comprising 3 bright yellow to orange, broad, wavy transverse bands, one across the head, one at midbody and one on the posterior body on a black ground colour. Each yellow to orange band often contains black, round to elongate oval shaped spots of variable size and symmetry. In some specimens the yellow to orange bands are very broad and fuse forming a reduction in band number. Legs and arms are bright yellow to black with similar rounded or oval spots which may sometimes form bands. Head venter and ventral surface colour is black. Habitat Tropical lowland rainforest up to an elevation of about 800 metres. Habits Diurnal and terrestrial frog that inhabits the forest floor leaf litter. Prey Feeds mainly on ants and mites.
