CENTRAL / SOUTH AMERICAN POISONOUS FROGS
Dendrobates truncatus
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 23mm Description Head dorsum and dorsal surface body colour is black with a pair of yellow ( usually complete ) dorsolateral stripes which commence on the snout ( often connected ), pass over the eyes and extend to the posterior body ( sometimes connected posteriorly ) and a usually incomplete yellow stripe on the lower flank either side of the body. Arms and legs are black with yellow longitudinal stripes or sometimes yellow mottling. Head venter, throat and ventral body surface colour is black with variable amounts of irregular blue mottling or lines. Often there is a distinct pale blue curved line on the chin or lower lip margin. Habitat Mainly found in rainforest up to an elevation of about 800 metres but has been found in dry forest. Habits Diurnal and terrestrial frog that inhabits the forest floor leaf litter. Prey Feeds mainly on ants, mites and insect larvae.
