CENTRAL / SOUTH AMERICAN POISONOUS FROGS
Dendrobates captivus
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 14mm Description Colour in life is not known with certainty. Head and body dorsal surface is brown ( possibly black ) with a dorsolateral series of pale ( white, yellow or red ), round to elongate oval shaped spots either side of the median line. The first pair of spots are anterior to the eye, the second pair above the shoulders, the 3rd pair at midbody and the 4th pair above the thigh on the posterior body. Arms and legs are brown ( possibly black ) with a bright yellow ( possibly orange or red ) spot at the base of the arm and a similar spot towards the upper thigh. Head venter and ventral surface colour is brown ( possibly black ) with large, irregular pale ( white, yellow or red ) spots ( notably a large chin spot and a large spot under each thigh ). Habitat The type locality was formerly a heavily forested lowland plain. Habits Diurnal and terrestrial frog. Prey No information available Poison Activity Poison Type: No information available
