CENTRAL / SOUTH AMERICAN POISONOUS FROGS
Phyllobates terribilis
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 37mm Description Head and body dorsum, flanks, arms, legs, head venter and ventral surface body colour is uniform bright golden yellow ( occasionally golden orange and rarely pale greenish yellow or turquoise cream ) sometimes with a persistence of black suffusion on arms and legs in mature adults. The fingers and toes are usually yellow with some black suffusion persisting in mature adults. Younger specimens are yellow with a black vertebral band that extends from between the eyes to the posterior body and a black flank stripe or band extending from the snout through the eyes to the posterior body. Arms and legs are yellow with variable amounts of black suffusion. Head venter and ventral surface body colour is yellow but heavily suffused with black. With age the black stripes and black suffusion disappears. Habitat Lowland humid rainforest up to an elevation of about 200 metres. Habits Diurnal and strictly terrestrial frog..
