CENTRAL / SOUTH AMERICAN POISONOUS FROGS
Dendrobates lamasi
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 16mm Description Head dorsum, dorsal surface body and flank colour is mainly black with yellow, longitudinal and transverse lines or stripes producing a distinct pattern. A yellow, transverse line is present anterior to the eyes. Two yellow dorsolateral lines or stripes commence from this yellow line ( anterior to the eyes ), pass between or over the eyes and extend to the posterior body. A lower lateral, often more irregular yellow stripe, extends from the snout, passes along the lower flank to the posterior body. The lower flank stripe is usually connected to the transverse head stripe. Another yellow, transverse line or stripe extends between the lower flank stripes ( posterior to the hump on the back ) and intersects with the dorsolateral stripes. The resulting pattern of black markings is a single black snout spot, 3 elongated spots or longitudinal bands ( covering the anterior and midbody region with 2 dorsolateral markings extending back from the eye and a vertebral marking between them ) and 3 elongate spots on the posterior body. Arms and legs are covered with black spots on a white to blue reticulation. Differs from similar species in that the base of the arm is usually bright blue ( yellow in closely related species ). Head venter and throat is yellow with black spotting. Anterior ventral surface body colour is white with black spotting Posterior ventral surface colour is yellow with black spotting. Habitat Tropical rainforest at elevations between about 300 to 700 metres. Habits Mainly an arboreal and diurnal frog that is found in or near bromeliads.
