MADAGASCAN POISONOUS FROGS
Mantella laevigata
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 22mm Description Dorsal head and body surface colour is yellow to yellowish green anteriorly usually ending in a semicircular border posteriorly or narrowing to a line posteriorly. Head laterally and flanks are blackish brown to black ( sometimes with a single small yellowish spot beneath the eye ) and the border between dorsum and flanks is sharply defined. Ventral surface colour is black with blue or bluish grey spotting or mottling. Throat is black usually without blue spotting ( sometimes weakly present ). Arms and legs are black above and black below with some blue or bluish grey spotting. Fingers and toes are black usually with blue spotting. Habitat Tropical rainforest at elevations up to about 700 metres. Habits Diurnal and mainly arboreal and scansorial. Breeds in tree holes. Prey Feeds mainly on ants and termites.
