MADAGASCAN POISONOUS FROGS
Mantella madagascariensis
Taxonomy and Biology Adult length: 20mm Description Dorsal surface body colour and flanks are black. Head dorsum is black with a yellow rostral stripe which often is continuous with yellow to green flank blotches and some specimens have a yellowish to green ( sometimes interrupted ) frenal stripe. Upper limbs are yellow to green with distinct orange flash markings. The yellow to green pigment extends onto the flanks as flank blotches and sometimes extends well onto the dorsal surface. Lower limbs are orange to orange brown with or without some black marbling or irregular banding. Ventral surface body, throat and arms are black with usually white to blue ( sometimes yellow or greenish ) spotting and a distinct semicircular marking on the lower lip. Femur, tibia and tarsus are usually orange with or without some black markings. Habitat Tropical rainforest at elevations up to about 1000 metres. Habits Diurnal and terrestrial frog. Prey Feeds mainly on ants and termites.
